Robyn Harris from North Cornwall

Living in North Cornwall for more than forty years has allowed me to witness its recovery from the deep recession of the seventies. European funding played a crucial role in supporting Cornwall, recognized as one of Europe's poorest regions. However, in modern-day Cornwall in 2023, the economic challenges have escalated due to a series of Conservative party victories and unfavourable policies.

One major issue is housing affordability, making it difficult for residents, including teachers and civil servants, to buy or rent properties. The wages are often low due to the seasonal nature of work in areas dominated by countryside and tourism.

The Cornwall Council is grappling with financial constraints after the Conservative government failed to fulfil promises of matching funds following the loss of European funding. Collaborating with Unison Local Government and working for Cormac, a council contractor, highlighted the challenges of delivering services with diminishing central government support.

My involvement with The Labour Party through unions, North Cornwall CLP, the town council, and active participation in community meetings has been invaluable. Being part of the Labour Women’s Network and engaging with skilled women leaders has been a rewarding experience in my political journey.

Labour For A Green New Deal

The Labour For A Green New Deal is a UK-centered campaign that aims to address climate change as a class issue with a radical economic plan. The focus is on democratic public ownership and workers' crucial role in the transition process. The campaign collaborates with individuals from various sectors, including students from Sheffield University and international members from Europe, to advocate for socialist transformation and support industrial struggles related to carbon-intensive industries. Quarterly meetings in Sheffield, London, and Manchester provide an opportunity for face-to-face collaboration and exciting progress towards global efforts to combat climate change. I am proud to be given the chance

to be involved.

Worker with Ladder

I am excited to dive into this new opportunity with the Tenant's Forum and Cornwall Housing's Scrutiny Panel. It is a privilege to be able to contribute to my community in a meaningful way. I look forward to engaging with fellow residents and hearing their perspectives on the services provided. Together, we can work towards enhancing sustainability and creating a more positive living environment for everyone. This journey is not just about identifying challenges but also about celebrating successes and striving for continuous improvement. I am grateful for the chance to make a difference and be part of this important dialogue within my local area.
